Dexedrine
Dexedrine is the brand name of the central nervous system stimulant dextroamphetamine. It is also sometimes sold under the name Dextrostat. Dexedrine has been prescribed to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and the sleep disorder narcolepsy. For patients with ADHD, dexedrine can help improve concentration and calmness, while for those with sleep disorders it can improve concentration and wakefulness.
Dexedrine is classified as a Schedule II controlled substance, meaning it has recognized medical uses but also a high potential for abuse and addiction. It is available in the form of tablets to be administered orally.
Dextroamphetamine, the active ingredient in Dexedrine, works by altering the levels of certain natural substances in the brain. As a stimulant drug, it can help increase concentration and attention, as well as improve organizational skills and behavioral control in ADHD patients. It can also be used to help people with narcolepsy stay awake, but it should not be used simply to combat tiredness or prevent sleep in those who do not have a sleep disorder.
The dosage of Dexedrine is based on the patient’s response and tolerability. It is usually taken 1-3 times a day, with the first dose in the morning. Doses are typically spaced 4-6 hours apart, as taking it too late in the day can disturb sleep. Liquid formulations require careful measurement with a dedicated dosing device.
Suddenly stopping Dexedrine after prolonged or heavy use can lead to withdrawal symptoms such as extreme tiredness, sleep problems, and mood changes. Doctors will therefore gradually reduce the dosage to avoid these effects. Patients should report any symptoms of astin to their doctor immediately
